STEPHANIE: Outward Bound Singapore
Written on: Tuesday, November 25, 2008 Time: 2:40 PM
One of the most adventurous activities to participate in is Outward Bound School Singapore (OBS). OBS was started in 1971. It has since been renamed Outward Bound Singapore (OBS) and is managed by the People’s Association. The aim of OBS is to “offer Singapore's young people exciting activities to develop their physical and mental ruggedness, personal confidence and leadership qualities." OBS has grown from humble beginnings as a training facility to an exceptional and unique training and consultation centre for people from all walks of life. They have programmes ranging from basic pre-teen student courses to interactive corporate programmes for professional executives, ensuring a course suitable for anyone and everyone.
For all OBS courses, each activity is planned, tested and fully supervised by qualified full-time instructors. Every trainer is also equipped with the sufficient skills and knowledge to ensure participants’ safety. All equipment used is regularly and thoroughly inspected by internal and external certifying bodies to ensure that safety standards are strictly adhered to. In the event of an emergency, there is a 24-hour medical centre with a team of specially trained nurses. All participants are also trained in basic safety procedures to ensure overall safety and the confidence to enjoy their courses.
The Outward Bound Singapore is situated at two locations in Singapore, namely at Pulau Ubin, an island off the north eastern coast of Singapore, and East Coast Park. Currently, a third of Pulau Ubin is being used for training on rugged terrains and a quick accessibility to the sea. Some of the state of the art facilities on Ubin include the Peak Ascent Tower, Tunnelling and Caving System, Inverse and Tripod Towers, rock climbing walls, dormitories, learning rooms and even a half-Olympic sized swimming pool for kayak practices. LI MIN: Youth Olympic Games
Written on: Monday, November 24, 2008 Time: 10:30 PM
Do you know what is one of the MAJOR events that is going to happen in Singapore 2010??
If you are still thinking, I shall tell you the answer now. It is the Youth Olympic Games !!
This is the first Youth Olympic and Singapore,
a small little dot to what others may seem,
is hosting this very grand event!!
Sorry for athletics that are over 18 years old or under 14 because the YOG only caters to athletics who are 14-18 years old. (Cheers to those who can qualify!!)
There are a total of 26 sports and 200 events. The common and must have sports most of you would already know. Therefore I would just want to highlight the innovative sports that YOG would be featuring and they are beach wrestling and BMX biking! (Excited now? :) )
YOG is not just an event on sports but also culture and education. Therefore Culture and Education Programme is formed to educate, engage and influence athletes to be true Olympians, to adopt and live by the Olympic Values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect and play active roles in their communities. ( In short, YOG is not only any Olympic event but it is one that allows LEARNING and INTERACTION)
By having , athletes can participate in activities that are integrated with their sports competition schedules. Therefore they will be able to develop as true sportsmen and ambassadors in the society and at the same time make friends and have lots of fun!
Some may wonder so where are the athletes sleeping and having their rest?
The answer is :
Nanyang Technological University (NTU) campus!!
The campus not only can host 5,000 athletes and team officials expected to
participate in the Games, but also have fantastic training facilities for many sports and excellent facilities for the culture and education programme. (Come down to Singapore and see how superb it is! Hurry! )
Are you wondering why choose Singapore to be the first to host ?..
The answer is:
· Because our modern island is a global success story, an international destination with a truly cosmopolitan mix of ages, races and cultures.
· Secondly, as a young nation, Singapore understands the importance of young people, and we’re investing heavily in their future.
· Moreover Singapore shares and champion similar values with the Olympic Movement which are excellence, friendship and respect.
· Singapore sports facilities are world-class and we continue to invest heavily in our venues, capabilities and transport infrastructure.
· Lastly we would feature innovative and exciting elements to support and strengthen the Olympic Movement and ensure that the legacy of the Games is felt long after they have ended.
Thus it has to be SINGAPORE who is given the golden opportunity to host the Youth Olympic Games.
So what are you waiting for after reading all the following? It’s time to fly to Singapore to be the one to experience Singapore!
SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX 2008
Written on: Sunday, November 16, 2008 Time: 3:17 AM
The recent uproar in Singapore has just zoomed past and well away in the month of October. Grand Prix Formula 1 race was a great success as 100,000 grand stand seats were sold out as fast as they were up for grabs. The first-ever night race in Formula One Grand Prix, was proudly held in Singapore. It lasted 3 days, from the test-run on the 26th to the actual race on the 28th September 2008.
Marina Bay
Marina Bay Race Circuit had its huge spotlights that beamed bright onto the track so the eager spectators can watch as every magnificent race car go by. The 5.067 km race track consists 23 turns, 61 laps and 3 over-taking points. The race was won by Fernando Alonso who claimed the title-winner of 2005 and 2006.
Fernando Alonso
“We were unlucky yesterday, very, very lucky today,” he said after a race which saw Ferrari fail to score a point and McLaren-Mercedes star Lewis Hamilton extend his World Championship lead to seven points after finishing in third place.
“After qualifying our hopes were completely gone,” added Alonso, “but again today shows F1 is unpredictable on Sunday. I had my fingers crossed all through the last lap! It was a great weekend for Formula One. We all had great challenges in front of us – and we will all be part of history.”
On the 28th of September, F1 came to a grand closing and the Singapore Grand Prix Executive Director, Michael Roche gave acknowledgement for Singapore for its many contributions to make the event a success.
The race in 2009 is surely going to be yet another exciting one as it is held on 27th September too. Be sure to grab your tickets now to get the great seats before it is all sold out!
If you have missed this year, make sure you do not miss next year's!

TANNY: Singapore - FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup 2008
Written on: Tuesday, November 4, 2008 Time: 6:21 PM
The event was held at the Singapore Sports School (SSS) on the 1-2 November 2008. The Heats and Finals were both held on the same day, morning and evening.
I was there as one of the officials on duty and the live race was AMAZING. Although it was not as Grand as the Olympics, but the atmosphere was there as all the 800 local fans were cheering on the local HOT swimmer, Tao Li.
Said by Tao Li to asiaone news,"because of the exams, I didn't train as hard for this World Cup as I did for the Asian Games or the Olympics."
In this meet, it was mentioned that for her 50m Women's Butterfly" the Republic's swimmer clocked 25.93 - smashing her previous short-course best of 26.48 set in last year's event. It also eclipsed her long-course national record of 26.73, when she won the Asian Games gold in the event at Doha in 2006."
Tao Li also did well in her pet event, 100m Women's Butterfly Finals, which brought her being the first Singaporean swimmer to clinch the Gold medal in the Olympics this year, as she clinched the Gold Medal for this event.
Today, Tao Li will be leaving Singapore for the remaining World Cup Series stops over the next three weeks - in Moscow, Stockholm and Berlin.
Another swimmer that was pleased with the results obtained in Singapore's Short Course Meet wasis the Olympic 1,500m freestyle gold medallist Oussama Mellouli from Tunisia.
The 24-year-old won four of the six events he participated in over the two-day World Cup - the 400m individual medley, and the 200m, 400m and 1,500m free.
But it was the event he did not win yesterday - the 200m IM - that pleased him most, as he shaved about 3 seconds off his personal best, despite coming in second just behind Brazil's Thiago Pereira.
He told asiaone news "There must be something good about Singapore that made me swim so quickly. It feels great to be jumping in the water and getting the best times." _____________________________________________________

is hosting this very grand event!!
